Marathon sits almost exactly at the halfway point of the Keys roughly 50 miles north of Key West and about two hours south of Miami along the Overseas Highway. That positioning alone solves a problem a lot of first-time Keys visitors don't think about until they're stuck in traffic: you don't want to drive the entire length of the island chain every time you want a change of scenery.
From a Marathon base, a day trip to Key West's nightlife and a day trip to Key Largo's reefs are both genuinely doable, instead of an all-day commitment each way. You get the best of both ends without committing to either one full-time.
There's also a practical side that surprises people. Marathon has everyday conveniences grocery stores, hardware stores, real restaurants minutes from the water, so a villa stay here doesn't mean stocking up on snacks for a week before you arrive. Not every villa in the area delivers the same experience, even within Marathon itself. A few things worth checking before you book:
1. Confirm which side of the island the property faces. Gulf-side sunsets and Atlantic-side sunrises are very different experiences know which one you're getting.
2. Ask about dock access, especially if you're bringing your own boat or want the option to fish right from the property.
3. Look at proximity to Sombrero Beach and the main attractions. Some villas sit closer to the action; others trade a few minutes of drive time for more privacy.
